With a week off from Sag Harbor, I finally had the opportunity to visit two best friends from law school, and my former roommates from from our clerkships in Los Angeles. So, on Friday from work, I hopped into my car and sped down to the Ocean City area of New Jersey to meet with Shawn and Maria Weede, crashing at her parents beach condo. John Stapleton met us at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning to go surfing. While I hadn't really spent any time surfing in LA, I definitely enjoyed the experience and challenge of standing on a piece of fiberglass in constantly moving water. It was freezing, the sun and beach were beaming, and the rush gained from a wave propelling me and the board forward forced an immediate smile and cheer.
Catching up with friends and talking about new and exciting things going on in their lives is definitely refreshing and worth looking up to. Shawn and Maria were amped talking about their recent purchase of a house in Westchester, PA, and diligently planning extensive renovations to the home before moving in (nearly doubling the square footage of the house!). We shared stories about recent life experiences, relationships and things to look forward to. The connection I've always had with Shawn from a philosophical perspective is well maintained even though we don't talk that often any more.
I then left Shawn behind so he could prepare for an upcoming trial, and drove to the Stapleton's new Philadelphia suburban home to visit John, Heather and their first son Noah. First time I've been able to meet the little strawberry blond kid, and he is cuter than ever... which he must have gotten from his mother. We watched him romp around the house, and I was surprised that at 7 months he is nearly walking on his own. He's a tall, strong kid, and super fun. John and I couldn't help but get excited and discuss our upcoming fantasy football season too. After a little bbq with him, I then ventured into Philly to continue my reunion of sorts in my old law school town.
